Mapping Identity: Part II

19 04 2011

Today’s map is so interesting to me, especially having lived on three different continents. It’s a map that was created by Google Earth, by overlaying satellite images on the existing map platform, and you can see where light concentration is on the map. How interesting that I currently live in one of the “brightest” parts of the world (no wonder I can’t see any stars). Enjoy!

(This map makes me want to do an experiment, and correlate this map to economic development. I wonder if physical infrastructure and economic development are strongly correlated? It seems like they would by by the looks of this map, with a few exceptions.)

Wow! It definitely looks like economic development wouldn’t be a perfect fit… Australia looks quite dark compared to India. Maybe it would be strongly correlated with gdp per capita and population density. But then again, lots of areas of China seem dark… interesting.

Wow. Berlin’s a very distinct blip. Maybe in answer to people asking me what part of the US I’m from, I could start saying “the bright half.” Think that would go over well?

That image is famous in part for its depiction of the Korean Penninsula.
