When Helping Hurts

27 09 2009

My father determined I needed to read a copy of this book. As he is a college professor, when my father assigns a book he generally expects people to take him up on his suggestion (or at least pretend to read it and come up with something intelligent to say). And when your college professor father actually goes so far as to buy the book for you and give it to you as a gift, you know it must be a big deal.

So I decided to read this book.

Steve Corbett and Brian Fikkert accurately identify the tension that many organizations and individuals face when approaching the problem of poverty. How do I go about addressing the issue of poverty in a way that is needed and welcome? Where do I channel financial gifts to make them most effective? How can I contribute my time and my energies to a solution to poverty in a practical way, without undermining local efforts?

In my own financial support of different organizations and individuals, I feel this tension acutely. Corbett and Fikkert offer what I think is a well-conceived solution to identifying the greatest need, finding the most helpful solution, and allocating time and your treasures accordingly.

I highly recommend the book for individuals, families, organizations, or foundations who want to cultivate a greater intentionality when addressing the problem of poverty.
