Denying the Holocaust… and reaping the benefits

21 09 2009

There is a whole Wikipedia page that outlines the history on Holocaust denials, which I discovered while doing research for this post. Someone has already posted Ahmadinejad’s name under the “Famous Holocaust Deniers” section. With one sentence, Ahmadinejad, president of Iran, thrust himself into global news. (I realize that, ironically, I am no exception to the attention he has gained from his denial of this tragic historical event).

When I used to babysit, it was not uncommon for one sibling to egg on the other by calling them a liar or contradicting their story or interrupting them at the dinner table or stealing their toy. President Ahmadinejad reminds me of the bully child.

Of course, the offending child receives attention, albeit negative. And of course they feel superior to the victim. And of course they end up with an overall confidence boost.

I don’t know what the long term consequences of his denial will be, but I imagine the benefits Ahmadinejad received from this outburst are many. I only hope that someone will slap him on the wrist for his bad behavior.

And now, indulging in my anger briefly (does this validate his denial of the Holocaust?): I have seen the gas chambers. I have walked the gravel path lined with hundreds of bunkrooms. I have felt the despair hanging in the air. I have borne witness to the stories of survivors. How dare you deny an event that so clearly showed the world the depravity of unquestioned leadership?
